The Child's Right and Rehabilitation Network (CRARN) in Eket, Akwa Ibom State was last week thrown into a state of mourning as it received a shocking news of the death of 14 year old girl, Miss Enobong Akpan who died early last week. Eno was reconciled in May 20010 with the father, who hails from Ekpi in Esit Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
According to a family source, Enobong fell ill and was taken to a church for prayer by the by the father, but brought her back home when her health exacerbated, where she finally gave up the ghost.
The Director of Administration of CRARN, Mr Emmanuel Okon disclosed that that management of CRARN was not aware of the deceased ill health, neither was it officially informed of the her death.
"Nobody from the family informed us that she was sick; we would have gone to their village and taken her to the hospital. We have just been told this morning by one of the reconciled children who came here to get their home based care allowance. She was supposed to here today, too among twenty of the reconciled children. Unfortunately, we got this devastating news. When we called the father on phone to inquire about it, this afternoon, he confirmed that she passed away three days ago. This is very sad." Mr Okon lamented.
Available records in CRARN indicate that, Miss Enobong was one of the star children in CRARN before she was reunited with the father, as she had twice won the Best Mathematics Student of the Year - 2009 and 2010, Best Graphic Artist of the Year 2010 and Second best Footballer of the Year 2010. Records further shows that her artistic dexterity was extensively displayed when a US based graphic artist, from Eket, Mr Victor Ekpuk organised a week long art workshop for the children at CRARN in March 2010 and where became the over all best artist after examinations were conducted.
Staff of the CRARN centre were seen in a forlorn mood throughout the day as news of the Junior Secondary 2 student who was heading for JSS 3 this coming September filtered into their ears. It was a sad moment for the centre, even as it shifted the distribution of the support to the reconciled children who now also receive support from the CRARN while at home.
